As you have seen from previous lesons, modals can have many different uses. For example, they can be used to express obligation, choice, and possibility.

Now let’s examine how to use modals of deduction.

What is deduction?

When we deduce, we make a guess (deduction) based on the evidence we have. You can be more or less sure about your guess. This degree of certainty of your guess is expressed in the choice of modal verb you use.
